Easy Homemade Paratha Recipe
Prep Time: 40 mins
Cook Time: 30 mins
Total Time: 1 hour 10 mins
Ingredients:
-
2 ½ cups of Organic Medium Chapati Atta Flour
-
¾ cup to 1 cup warm water
-
½ teaspoon sea salt
-
1 tablespoon of neutral oil
-
4 tablespoons melted ghee
Instructions
1. Make the dough
-
In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt.
-
Add the neutral oil, then begin adding the warm water gradually (start with ¾ cup). Mix until a soft, non-sticky dough forms. Use more water if needed.
-
Knead the dough for about 3–5 minutes until smooth and pliable.
-
Lightly coat the dough surface with a few drops of oil, cover with a damp cloth or a lid, and rest for about 20 minutes.
2. Divide and prep for layering
-
After resting, divide the dough into 8 equal portions.
-
Roll each portion lightly into a smooth ball. Keep them covered while you work on each one to prevent drying.
3. Create layers
-
Lightly dust your rolling surface with flour. Take one dough ball and flatten it a little with your fingers.
-
Roll into a circle ~5–6 inches in diameter.
-
Spread a small amount (≈ ½ tablespoon) of the melted ghee over the surface, then sprinkle a pinch of dry flour.
-
Fold one side about ⅓ over the centre, then the other side over that to form a square (or you can fold into a triangle if preferred).
-
Dust lightly with flour again and roll the folded piece gently into a ~6-7 inch square or triangle shape, being careful to keep the layers intact.
4. Cook the paratha
-
Heat a flat skillet or tawa over medium heat.
-
Remove any excess flour from the rolled paratha and place it on the hot pan.
-
Cook for about 40–60 seconds until you see small bubbles forming on the surface.
-
Flip it, drizzle about ¼ teaspoon of melted ghee over the cooked side, spread gently with a spatula.
-
Flip again, drizzle a little more ghee, and press down gently with the spatula until light golden brown spots appear on both sides and it puffs slightly.
-
Transfer to a clean cloth-lined container or plate and keep covered while cooking the remaining parathas to retain warmth and softness.
5. Serve & store
-
Serve the parathas hot, alongside your favorite curry, chutney, yogurt or pickle.
-
To store leftovers: once cooled, place in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 2-3 days. Reheat on a hot pan until warmed through.
